Casio The Casio is 3 years old and sells for less than $125.
Sony The Sony was released in 2010 and sold in December 2010 for about $300.
Finepix s7000 The Finepix s7000 is a bridge camera and sold for about $500 in 2004. The very interesting information here is that pocket $100 cameras equal the performance of a more expensive bridge camera of just a few years ago.
Finepix Z70 The Finepix Z70 is about $100 and is a compact camera like the Sony and the Casio.
Canon EOS Rebel T3i The Canon EOS Rebel T3i is an APS-C DSLR with 18 megapixels and was tested with a kit 18-55mm IS (image stabilized) lens. The kit cost is around $700 in 2011. You can see that the low light performance of the larger lens and the larger sensor is extraordinary.
I did not adjust the cameras to have the same exposure or to have the same ISO setting. I put the cameras in the automatic modes that people would really use. I did not test flash or brightly lit scenes, because the cameras have very similar performance. So the following shots are handheld in difficult lighting situations. The cameras did what ever they do to take the pictures. It is not possible to judge how much is sensor performance or how much is the on-board camera processing or how much is due to optical image stabilization. If you are really curious, all of the EXIF settings are intact in the images.

Fujifilm Finepix z70 The blurring and noise are due to small sensor size and lack of image stabilized lens. |
